Having a crate for your puppy to sleep in or stay in for a short time should not be looked at as a "bad thing", It's a good "safety" practice. Puppies love chewing/eating things they shouldn't. They don't know any better. So when you have to run to the store or it's naptime/bedtime, a crate is a great safety measure to keep them from getting in harms way while your not able to keep an eye on them. Once grown they'll still like to get in their crate to have some 'alone time'. 

I suggest at least a 24" crate, but my preference is a 30" for most adults.  My favorite is the Frisco brand dog crates. Here's a link for the blue color:
